And the Winner of a Meta Quest 3 is...
- Patata School
Jonathan H, congratulations!
The vibrant colors, like the deep red of the rose against the soft blue background, immediately captured attention, while the small, thoughtful details—such as the character's gentle smile and playful shoes—added charm and depth.
What Jonathan said about his piece:
"Had a lot of fun recreating the character in 3D and made a few changes to the original Illustration. I added some details, added a lil friend and changed the shoes. Think they fit the garden theme better. I liked the glasses in the lesson so much that they also had to be in. I really like the brushes and using the normal map to get that painterly feel. They work together beautiful. Thank you so much for the great brush pack and the superduper Patata School content. Keep up the good work."
In second place, Patrice Ong
Patrice Ong's entry earned a close second place due to its exceptional visual appeal and intricate design. The character, adorned with glowing stars and surrounded by autumnal leaves, creates a mesmerizing and ethereal atmosphere. The vibrant colors and delicate details, like the star-shaped ornaments and soft lighting, make the piece stand out as a beautifully crafted work of art.
The animation transition between day and night further elevates the piece, showcasing Patrice's technical skill and creativity. As the scene shifts, the glowing stars come to life in a new way, adding depth and dynamic beauty to the overall presentation. Although it didn't win first place, Patrice's entry was a striking and memorable contender.
"This texture painting course and brushes came at a good time as I was planning on trying out a more illustrative style for 3D. Thank you Patatas! Love the brushes! My character is an enoki mushroom out gathering star fruit. Beware of falling stars! Just wanted to do something lighthearted and fun. I had two directions i wanted to take for the colouring of this piece but i couldn't decide, so in the end i did both to experiment."
In third place, Ruta Babelyte
Ruta Babelyte earned third place for her exceptional ability to translate her 2D illustration into a captivating 3D character. The transition from a flat, drawn medium to a fully realized, dimensional figure was executed with remarkable precision, preserving the charm and personality of the original design. Her character, with its distinctive style—marked by the bold, angular hair, expressive face, and striking yellow skirt—retains the whimsical and slightly edgy quality of a hand-drawn illustration, which is no small feat in 3D modeling.
What made Ruta’s work stand out is the seamless integration of textures and forms that give her character both depth and a unique presence. The simple yet expressive pose, combined with the carefully chosen color palette of soft pastels, effectively highlights the character's personality. Ruta’s ability to maintain the integrity of her 2D art while breathing new life into it in a 3D space is a testament to her artistic skill, earning her a well-deserved spot in the top three of the competition.
Thanks so much everyone for such an incredible contest. We were so impressed by the quality of the pieces and can't wait to run a new contest very soon.
